Quito, Aug 26 (Sputnik) .- After 8 years of debate, with 79 votes in favor, the plenary session of the National Assembly of Ecuador approved on Tuesday the Organic Health Code, which includes, among other issues, the use of cannabis for therapeutic purposes, emergency abortion and assisted reproduction.
“The Plenary of the National Assembly approved the Organic Health Code with 79 affirmative votes,” the Assembly said in a press release.
Legislator Wilson Garzón, president of the Assembly's Health Commission, told reporters on Tuesday that the new legal body establishes that emergency abortion will be authorized when there is a gynecological-obstetric emergency and the mother or fetus is in danger of lose their life, but abortion is not decriminalized.
According to Garzón, what is sought is to prevent women from dying due to lack of timely care when an abortion occurs.
Regarding the therapeutic use of cannabis, they established available sitions to treat it like any other product or medicine that contains substances subject to control, that is, special prescription books, authorized prescribers, authorized pharmaceutical establishments and services, use in specific pathologies determined by the competent authority.
Once the Code of Health is sent to the Executive, he will have 30 days to approve or veto it. (Sputnik)
