Quito, Aug 27 (Sputnik) .- Pro-life right-wing organizations in Ecuador asked President Lenín Moreno on Wednesday for a partial veto of the Organic Health Code, which includes, among other issues, emergency abortion, approved on the day previous.
«From Libres we call on citizens, pro-life assembly members, Catholic and Christian groups, the Episcopal Conference, and all those who defend life, family and freedom, to unite to demand the presidential veto of this nefarious Organic Health Code that seeks to promote a Marxist, progressive and life threatening agenda, “says a statement released by the organization Libres – Alianza por la Libertad.
On Tuesday, after eight years of debate and with 79 votes in favor, the plenary session of the National Assembly (unicameral parliament) of Ecuador approved the Health Code.
The group Familia Ecuador, through an open letter to Moreno, also criticized or the Code and requested a veto for ten articles, considering that they violate family values and the Constitution.
Meanwhile, the Acción Provida Foundation also spoke out against the Code, ensuring that in addition to allowing abortion as an obstetric emergency , empowers the change of sex during puberty, access by minors to contraception without parental consent, sex education with gender ideology as well as the promotion of surrogacy.
In the opposite position, Assemblywoman Wilma Andrade, president of the Democratic Left party (center-left), described as an important step that the legislation prohibits the criminalization of women in cases of obstetric emergency, although she regretted that the decriminalization of abortion due to rape has yet to be achieved.
For its part, the Surkuna Human Rights Support and Protection Center highlighted the approval of the Code as an achievement of the movements feminists and human rights, especially on the issue of emergency abortion.
Surkuna also described as positive the inclusion in the Code of issues such as child and adolescent pregnancy, unsafe abortion, maternal mortality and suicide as public health problems, for which compulsory comprehensive care by the State is established.
Likewise, the organization recognized as an advance that has been legislated considering gender and sexual orientation as rights proper to human dignity, ensuring that public officials recognize these rights without discrimination based on sex, gender identity or sexual orientation.
Once the Health Code is sent by the legislature to the Executive Branch, the latter will have a thirty-day period to approve or veto it . (Sputnik)
